What is Immediate Payment Service
Introduction-
IMPS is an instant payment inter-bank electronic funds transfer system in India. IMPS offer an inter-bank electronic fund transfer service through mobile phones. Unlike NEFT and RTGS, the service is available 24/7 throughout the year including bank holidays.
IMPS could be accessed through Mobile, ATM, Internet, SMS, Branch or USSD.
IMPS have no minimum limit but have a maximum limit of Rs. 2 lakh if the payment is forward through bank account number and IFSC code. The maximum limit is only for Rs. 10,000 if transfers have been made through Mobile number and MMID.

Funds transfer/Remittance by using-
1. Mobile number & MMID (P2P)-
- IMPS is an instant Interbank electronic fund transfer service capable of processing person to person, person to account and person to merchant remittances via Mobile, Internet and Atm, the service is available 24x7. Under this the sender and receiver should have to register for mobile banking and get unique ID otherwise funds cannot be transferred.
- MMID is 7 digit code, which is used by remitter for transfer of funds to beneficiary.
2. Account number & IFS Code (P2A)- Under IMPS funds can also be transferred by remitter to beneficiary through bank account number and IFS code. If the bank account of any one or both (remitter or beneficiary) is not registered with mobile number, they have to make transfer the money through account number with IFSC code.
3. Aadhaar number (ABRS)- Remitter can initiate IMPS transaction by using the beneficiary's AADHAAR number, which acts as a financial address & which will be linked to the beneficiaries account number.
Query Service on Aadhaar Mapper (QSAM)-
To facilitate the effective implementation of ABRS, a new feature is being added to the existing NUUP (USSD based platform on *99#) service. Under this new service, known as "Query Service on Aadhaar Mapper" the customer will be able to know : -
- Whether his/her AADHAAR number is seeded/linked to any bank account number or not?
- If yes, then with which bank and when was it last updated?
